Should Supreme Court proceedings be televised?

Yes, I think it should be televised. Not only televised, but broadcasted on radio as well because then everyone has the ability to see, hear, or read the Supreme Court ruling. I think it would also provide people an opportunity to see how the Supreme Court works.

I do not know about anyone else, but I don't like taking the time to read through pages and pages of the court cases. Nor do I have that kind of time. Don't get me wrong, I think that all three methods have their advantages and disadvantages, but it should be available in all formats so that we can have it available to suit our needs and wants.

Personally I do feel that the Supreme Court proceedings should be televised. We as a society should be kept in the loop with the supreme court prceedings. We play taxes, we pay the ridiculous gas prices, we follow all the laws, and we fight wars. We have earned the right to be in the know.

I cannot speak for another man, but i myself feel we have earned that right. I also agree with froggieflip they should radio brodcast the proceedings.

If we can televise court proceedings such as the OJ Simpson case, I don't see why Supreme Court rulings are done behind closed doors. The results of such cases often impact the country as a whole and set in stone, precedent for rulings for years to come. While these cases are typically drawn-out and long-winded, it would not be much different than the "sleep-aids" shown on CSPAN today.

The fact that there is any sort of a debate on whether these cases should be televised raises the question "what are our supreme court justices trying to hide"? Most of us would agree that we would not want our jobs televised to be scrutinized by others with a fine-tooth comb. However, when the decisions of these individual's duties include repercussions that could affect us (and our future generations to come), it is only obvious that these should be open to the public and open for scrutiny by all. This would hopefully ensure that the rulings from these cases coincide with the will of the people. After-all, is this not what we expect from these justices?

Taking the question literally, yes the Supreme Court proceedings should be televised. Preferably on CSPAN, instead of constant AEI/Brookings/etc. conferences or a Q&A over a new political book.

That being said, I don't know if anyone would watch that more than anyone would watch any of the important Congressional hearings that have earned CSPAN the reputation of being very boring.

At the very least, though, the opportunity should be presented to us, given how important Supreme Court rulings can be.

Though I'd imagine if Roe V. Wade were ever brought before the SC, it would be on every major TV network...

Ok i realize i am going against what everyone else said but No i don't think supreme court proceedings should be televised.
The reason is because woulnd't you like to know that all the decisions made are turly based on facts and evidence and not because someone realizes they are being televised and is playing it up for the camera? I know people say they make the same decisions and say the same things regardless of the camera but i refuse to believe that the camera doesn't play at least a small part in what goes on in the court room.
Now i definantly think the public has a right to read all about what went on inside, but I don't think we should get live action coverage.

You have a point Amy, but what if there was some way that we could keep the 5 justices in the supreme court from knowing they are being broadcast? I've heard that they are really good at what they do, so maybe there is still that possiblity that they would continue doing what they always do and not play it up?

Yes, I do think they should be televised. We as tax paying citizens should have the right to know what goes on in the Supreme Court cases. It would help us learn what our courts are deciding and how it all works in the Supreme Court.

I agree with amy that the media could influence some of the minor things in the court room. I don't think it makes a huge difference but it could be a factor. So maybe they could put a hidden camera and not let the judges and jury know they're being filmed!.. lol that would really work, but for now I think they should be videotaped or at least audio recorded for society's benefit.
